Company description
Welcome to Sovereign Centre! Conveniently located in the heart of Liguanea (LI-GAN-KNEE), Kingston, the centre is modern, 3-level, one-stop shopping complex for all your needs. The centre houses a variety of brand name stores from A to Z…well, almost, from A to Y, Ammars to Yao Restaurant on three levels. Some main attractions include two cinemas, a freestanding bank and, on the lower floor, a food court with 10 shops offering a selection of gastronomical delights. Parking is secure and has been expanded to accommodate the overflow.

The history of Sovereign Centre is as colourful as the place itself. The Loshusan brothers purchased the land with the idea of developing a shopping centre. Between 1989 and 1993, Clifton Yap Architects envisioned and interpreted the concept, which
Show more materialized into a unique shopping mall design.

Sovereign Centre is indeed an architectural marvel built on the site of a former Tudor style home, adopting a strip-and-mall type concept. The free flowing, easily accessible, airy structure on three levels is at once inviting and pleasing to the eye. So pleasing, in fact, that it won the Governor General’s award for architectural design.

Liguanea — also known as Matilda’s Corner — is where Old Hope and Hope Roads meet on their way to Papine, a community at the foothills of the Blue & John Crow Mountains and on either side of the Hope River. The name Liguanea refers to the entire plain which stretches from the foothills of the mountains to the harbour on Kingston’s south coast. It is also the name of a locality whose boundary East/West is from Papine to Jamaica House, North/South by Barbican Road and Trafalgar Road in New Kingston.

Atrium at Sovereign CentrePrior to the 1980’s, Liguanea was somewhere you drove through on your way to somewhere else. There was an outdated post office housed in a quaint old building, three mid-sized supermarkets, a dry cleaner, Photo Express, where you could get your film processed (before digital cameras became widespread), and the very popular Contemporary Art Gallery which is no longer there.

Over the years, Liguanea has become a favourite for residents and visitors to Kingston & St. Andrew. Amidst housing developments, Liguanea is bustling with government offices, two major universities, a number of schools and churches, a major hospital, the Bob Marley Museum, among others. Of course, Sovereign Centre remains the commercial hub that attracts and caters to all ages, with its ideal mix of activities, service, entertainment, or just sheer relaxation, in an atmosphere that is vibrant without being frantic. Come visit and see for yourself.
