The Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) evolved from the British Medical Association (BMA) Jamaica Branch, which was constituted as the first overseas branch of the BMA in 1877. After Independence in 1965, the MAJ was formed to replace that body and the membership has grown over the years to approximately 1,820 doctors.
