Having worked in the industry for a number of years both locally and in the United States, Frederick and Maureen Sutherland saw the need to introduce a world class professional cleaning service to Jamaica. With that urge came a desire to raise the profile of professionals working in the industry.
M.E.L was the first company in Jamaica to employ women as porters and grounds maintenance workers, giving them equal opportunities to choose a path of their own. Today, M.E.L has a workforce of over 650 trained professionals.

Milestone Environmental Limited started in early 1999 after acquiring the portfolio of Custodial & Property Management Services Ltd, a company which had been managed by Frederick Sutherland Today with over 650 professionals on staff, and a management team with over 30
